Film Review: Notorious

Notorious Film ReviewFinally the biopic film of hip-hop megastar Notorious B.I.G, real name Christopher Wallace, has been released. The film, released in America on the 16th January 2009, has been long awaited but has it lived up to its hype?

In September 2008 first previews came out for the film and then at the B.E.T Awards an exclusive trailer was shown all of which looked superb. The final result though however is saying otherwise.

It’s directed by George Tillman JR. the same guy who brought you the Barbershop Series, featuring Ice Cube, then producers include Sean “P.Diddy” Combs and Voletta Wallace (B.I.G’s mother). By now I hope you can see the problems arising. Who exactly here has experience in the film industry? Diddy doesn’t! What about the director? Well he has some, but it’s limited and not major record breaking US Box Office Films.

This is a shame, a film about Notorious B.I.G should be massive and a seller, instead it’s just a teaser lacking the final touches needed to make it a success.

So there’s the negative aspect discussed, what about the positive? Well…. your going to see a lot of famous hip-hop stars being acted by other people in the film. Sean Combs, Lil Kim, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur all heavily influenced and played a part in his life, therefore they are all in it. It’s also going to be accurate, many of those people are still alive and had a say in the film, meaning it will be an educational experience to find out how one of the biggest rappers actually made it big.

The film also has a soundtrack which I would say is no doubt going to be a seller. Released under Bad Boy Records it is sure to do well in the US. Bad Boy Records are the same people that made the successfull Bad Boy II Soundtrack, for the 2002 motion picture featuring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, so my hopes for the album are high. It’ll also be containing three previously unreleased tracks from the B.I.G archives.
